There are some artists who constantly use alternate tunings, but many guitarists spend most of their lives in standard tuning, maybe with an occasional drop D. Drop D tuning is when you tune the top string, or the 6th string of your guitar, to a D instead of an E while keeping the rest of the guitar in standard tuning.
